Germany / Trinidad and Tobago
WHEN AND WHERE WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU TOOK PART IN CARNIVAL?
“The first time I took part in a carnival was 2006 in Trinidad.”
WHICH BAND DID YOU PLAY WITH?
DESCRIBE WHAT YOU WORE IF YOU CAN REMEMBER.
“It was a bright orange costume with headpiece, metallic accents and the classic belt that everybody remembers and probably misses. ” :)
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG?
“That was 'Ay Cyah Wait' from Shurwayne Winchester."
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF THIS DAY?
“Being sunburned and that they switched off the lights when we were crossing the savanna stage. It was 8pm and pitch black. We were too late getting there so everything was over.”
HAVE YOU BEEN BACK TO THIS CARNIVAL?
“Yes I have been back several times.”
IS THIS YOUR FAVOURITE CARNIVAL? IF NOT, WHICH IS AND TELL US WHY.
“It is my favourite carnival in terms of big elaborate parade with full program (hair, makeup, tights, shoes, just the perfect look).
But remembering my carnivals in smaller islands I have to admit I enjoyed St. Lucia because 6,7,8 years ago they used to play only authentic St. Lucian music and that gave the carnival a very unique vibe. All the music was in patois and everybody was laughing because all the locals would understand it but the foreigners had no idea what the song was about. It was very up-tempo, the wining was much quicker and it was just a good vibe. It wasn’t about looking perfect but was just about having a ball, being sweaty, hanging on a fence upside down somewhere and being completely knocked-out the next day.”
ANY CARNIVALS ON YOUR AGENDA FOR 2020?
“Most definitely Trinidad. Hmmm, yeah only Trinidad so far."
DO YOU HAVE ONE PARTICULAR CARNIVAL YOU’RE STILL DREAMING TO ATTEND ONE DAY?
“Everybody talks a lot about Brazil and many people told me I need to go so I think I have to consider going there one day when I am not so affiliated with Trinidad Carnival anymore.”
